Setting up your Stripe account

Updated over a month ago

Before you can receive funds from your crowdfunding campaign, you'll need to set up a Stripe account. This guide will walk you through the process step by step.

Before you start

You'll need:

  • Your organisation's bank account details

  • Government-issued photo ID

  • Proof of address (if required)

  • Your phone number

  • Your date of birth

Important things to know

  • Create a new account - If you already have a Stripe account, you'll need to create a new one specifically for Spacehive. This ensures your crowdfunding income is kept separate.

  • Set up early - Complete your Stripe account setup before launching your campaign to avoid delays in receiving your funds later.

  • Verification time - Stripe verification usually takes 1-2 working days, but can take longer if additional information is needed.

  • Double-check details - Make sure all information is accurate, especially your bank details.

Setting up your Stripe account: Step by step

We recommend keeping this guide open in another tab while you set up your account so you can refer back to it at each stage.

1. Access your Stripe setup

  • Go to the 'Delivery' section of your Project Dashboard

  • Click 'Set up payments'

2. Follow these steps through the Stripe setup process

Use the table below to guide you through each section of the Stripe setup process:

Please ensure that the email is the same as the email used for the Spacehive account. This way we connect your Stripe and Spacehive accounts.

Tell us about your business

If you are a charity or CIC/CIO, you will need to choose non-profit and from there indicate that you are a Charitable Company. If you are applying as an individual or if your group is very informal and has no bank account, then you need to click Individual/Sole Trader and follow the steps from there.

Business Details

In this section you need to add your organisation's key information. As charities in the UK do not register with Companies House (like they do in the US), enter your charity number instead of the CRN. If your organisation does not have a charity number or CRN, enter "00000000" and this will allow you to progress. Stripe will contact you directly if they require clarification. Do not click on the links to Companies House as you do not need to apply for one.

Business Representative

This is someone who has the authority to set up a Stripe account, adding in the Bank Details.

Business Owner

For most project creators, this is not applicable so skip this section.

Business Directors

For most organisations these are the Trustees of your organisation. We recommend you add the details of two trustees (if you don't have trustees, just enter your closest equivalent). A member of Stripe's support team will follow up with you if they require any more info.

Business Executive

This is someone who works for the organisation but who is not a Trustee. This is often the person who is leading on the project.

Let's review your details

This is the section where you can make any changes to the details you have already provided.

If there isn't a direct match for your answer, just choose the option that feels closest. If you don't have a specific document, upload something else that best represents you. If there are any issues, a member of the Stripe support team will contact you directly to set up your account.

What happens next?

After submitting your details:

  • Stripe will review your information

  • You may receive emails asking for additional information

  • Once verified, your account is ready to receive funds

Don't worry if your organisation structure doesn't fit perfectly with Stripe's categories. Their support team will contact you if they need clarification before your campaign starts.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Make sure your bank details are correct. This is the most common reason for payment delays.
